Jumping on the Naked Palette Bandwagon with Naked Smoky

So it's finally happened, I've joined the legion of Beauty Bloggers that have an Urban Decay naked palette. Sellout much eh? When the Naked Smoky palette was announced by Urban Decay, my initial thought was 'meh'. I was more intrigued by the matte lipsticks they were releasing at the same time in the UK. So when I was invited along to the launch of the Naked Smoky Palette, I had no intention of picking one up. However, when I saw it in the flesh, I forgot about Makeup Rehab and gave in to temptation. I've had a little play with it and thought I'd share my first impressions.

High - Champagne shimmer micro glitter
Dirtysweet - Medium bronze
Radar - Metallic taupe with iridescent micro glitter
Armor - Metallic silver-taupe tonal sparkle
Slanted - Light metallic gray
Dagger - Medium charcoal micro-shimmer
Black Market - Jet-black satin
Smolder - Deep plum taupe
Password - Cool taupe matte
Whiskey - Rich brown matte
Combust - Soft pink-taupe
Thirteen - Light beige satin

Daytime Smoky Look  - High, Dirtysweet, Radar, Whiskey and Thirteen

Gunmetal Smoky Look - High, Armor, Slanted, Dagger, Black Market, Cumbust & Thirteen

If you've ever struggled for ideas with makeup palettes, the Naked Smoky comes with a lookbook to inspire you with 4 different ways to wear the palette. My looks were done without referring to the lookbook.

Contrary to popular belief, the new Naked Smoky palette isn't filled with previous shades. Only 3 of the 12 shadows are exclusives from past palettes and the other 9 are never seen before colours. The shadows are wonderfully pigmented and blend easily. The only 'dud' shade would be Password which I found needed slightly more work to blend. I'd also say that as a medium skin tone, Black Market could be...blacker.

This is the perfect palette for me because it offers a range of colours that don't all seem to basically be the same colour family (I'm looking at you Naked3), with shades of bronze, gunmetal and even a purple in there. There's colour wash shade (combust) that blends into the lid perfect days that I want a slightly underdressed look or just want a winged eyeliner paired with a bold lipstick. It also has the perfect colours necessary for a classic dark black smoky eye.

Although, I've broken my 5 pan purchases, I kind of have no regrets about this one. I feel like this Naked palette is the only one that's really spoken to me out of the 6 that exist. If you're a vaguely alternative person who's been considering this palette, I'd definitely recommend picking this up. This palette would have been perfect for my teenage self before I was introduced to bright colourful eye shadows.

The Naked Smoky is currently available at Selfridges and Debenhams in the UK and Sephora in the US for £38

Jeffree Star Cosmetics Velour Liquid Lipsticks

I've only had these Jeffree Star liquid lipsticks forever, so it's about time I reviewed these! I pre-ordered the original 3 liquid lipsticks that Jeffree Star had launched his line with, Prom Night, Redrum and I'm Royalty end of last year. I admit it was an impulse purchase, which I originally did regret as I had a dupe for each of the original shades. However that sentiment completely disappeared once they had arrived and I got to try them out.

Redrum is described as the perfect red.

Prom Night is a bright matte pink.

I'm Royalty is a royal purple.

The bright hot pink packaging just screams Jeffree Star which is pretty damn awesome although I can imagine it not being to everyone's taste. Thank god the liquid lipsticks are unscented as I find they can be very off-putting. Each shade is super pigmented but expect some layering if you're applying it sparingly.

Each shade has a slightly different formula with Redrum performing the best in my opinion. I find it the most resistant and long lasting. Prom Night applies a little streaky and needs extra layering but is also rather longlasting and resistant to fading. I'm Royalty needs minimal layering but is prone to fading in the center of the lips. I find they tend to last around 4/5 hours without any noticable difference. Depending on what you eat though, the lipstick is prone to fading in the center of the lips. If you're wearing this for a night out, you won't be able to remove it with a makeup wipe, you'll have to use a proper makeup remover.

While the market is oversaturated with liquid lipsticks, Jeffree Star's liquid lipsticks really stand out as they are so comfortable on the lips. While you can feel other liquid lipsticks mattify and dry up on your lips, Jeffree Star's formula dries down without causing discomfort to the lips. Even though the finish is matte, I find this also doesn't flake away like all other liquid lipsticks tend to. The brand recommend's exfoliating and moisturising your lips before applying but I've never bothered and had no issues.

You can purchase Jeffree Star's Velour liquid lipsticks on the Jeffree Star website which offers international shipping. If you're in the UK and want to avoid customs charges, I'd recommend purchasing from Cocktail Cosmetics for £13 although they don't tend to have much stock.

Get The Look | Marisol 'Flaca' Gonzales Orange Is The New Black Inspired Makeup

It took a while, but I've finally jumped on the Netflix bandwagon. Not that not having Netflix has stopped me from watching some of their awesome shows (Daredevil & Kimmy Schmidt). However, the first original Netflix show I've ever watched is Orange Is The New Black. I absolutely love learning about all the female characters and their back-stories. One of the characters, 'Flaca', seriously stood out to me in season 3. Why? Because it's been incredibly obvious that she was a fellow alternative woman of colour. She was shown wearing some pretty in your face makeup this season, including a blue lipstick. Naturally, I decided to recreate one of these looks featuring a yellow eye look with purple lips. To tone down the look slightly, I swapped out the yellow eyeshadow for gold.

Key things you'll need for this look:
  • Purple lipstick - I've used Revlon's Matte Balm in Shameless
  • Gold Eyeshadows
    • A Bright Gold - I used Sugarpill's Goldilux pure pigment
    • A Muted Gold - Illamasqua's
  • A Neutral Socket Shadow
  • Eyeliner - Liquid or gel, it's up to you.
  • Purple Hair Extensions (Optional)
1. After applying primer on the eyes, apply a bright yellow gold eyeshadow on the centre of the lid and into the inner corner of the eyes.
2. Apply a muted gold shadow into the outer lid and outer V of the eye. Make sure to blend a little in to the gold around the centre of the lid.
3. Next blend in a neutral lid shade into the crease
4. Add a heavy cat eye and mascara.
5. Finish the look of by pairing your gold eyes with purple lipstick.

Life Lately | July in Photos

July hasn't been one of the most stressful but rewarding months this year. I'm happy to wave goodbye to it and am looking forward to a more chilled out August filled with adventure. So what have I been up to?

INDULGING | Despite owning an Independent Birmingham card for a few months now, I've only recently gotten any use out of it. I think for the next 6 months or so, me and my partner will be making an extra effort to discover local business' instead of eating at food chains.

KIT BUILDING | For most of this year, I was 90% sure I wasn't going to be attending IMATS. However, with the makeup course, it felt silly not to go as it was the perfect place to build my own start up kit.

ANTICIPATING | I've been toying with the idea of visiting Berlin for a few months. In July, I finally booked my flights over to Germany. Part of my trip will be solo and during the other half I'll be visiting a friend of mine in Dresden. I'm feeling really anxious about the solo travel.

QUALIFYING  | Over the last 2/3 months I've been attending makeup school. I'm relieved to be able to say that I manage to pass my exams. Around the same time, I had a lot of stress with trying to sort out paperwork for work as they've offered me a 2 year contract. Now I just need to work on my coursework to obtain the qualification.

DYEING | I've felt as though the turquoise only dye was a little...flat. As someone who had no idea what she was doing, adding blue to the ends of the dye experiment was a success.

REARRANGING | I did a naughty but useful thing. Pre-imats I had met up with friends at their house and fell in love with her whole room setup. The one thing I particularly loved was this IKEA table and even though I'm meant to be saving for my upcoming travels, I decided to just go for it. I felt way too accomplished by setting up the table myself.

Glamming Up A Day Look With Glitter Liner

It's been too long since I've done a vaguely colourful and glitzy makeup look. I tend to overwork myself and do as much overtime as possible. while trying to semi-blend in to the working environment. Anyway, this unfortunately isn't a particularly exciting look but it's probably the most exciting one I've managed to do in a while. Fingers crossed I'll be able to do a few more soon. Ever since IMATS I've been looking for any excuse to finally use one of my Lit Glitters.

Since I was heading into town for the earliest Saturday shopping session I have ever endured, I didn't have 1, the time and 2, the nerve to shop about in over the top makeup. I thought I'd glitz up my casual day to day makeup of a winged eyeliner and nude lip (Jeffree Star's Celebrity Nude may be the most beautiful nude I've ever owned) by popping a bit of turquoise glitter on the lids. To make applying the glitter liner easier, I used a seafoam green eye pencil on the lids to outline where it would go. The lit glitters compared to the Violet Voss glitters I picked up the year before, are a lot finer. Making it easy to apply in thin intricate details. The lit glitter adhesive is unlike any other I've tried. It looks like water and all you need to do is dip your brush into the adhesive then into the glitter, then apply!
